What's the opportunity?

The Senior Director, Data Engineering and Calgary Innovation Lab Lead will have dual responsibilities, equally overseeing the development and implementation of data engineering solutions for the capital markets business and leading the Calgary Innovation Lab. As the Data Engineering lead, this role will empower capital market businesses to seamlessly adopt the Lumina, RBC’s Analytics Enterprise Data and AI Platform, fostering deep collaboration and unifying data across the organization to unlock the full potential of analytics and AI. This will involve creating new and innovative ways to leverage data across all of businesses, defining and supporting business strategies, and providing leadership to development teams to deliver data solutions for critical applications and regulatory requirements, with a focus on AI.

As the Calgary Innovation Lab Lead, this role will drive innovation and growth through the development and implementation of cutting-edge solutions,

leveraging the lab as a hub for creative problem-solving and experimentation. This will involve collaborating with cross-functional teams to identify and prioritize opportunities for innovation, developing and executing strategies to drive business growth and profitability, and fostering a culture of innovation and experimentation within the lab.

The Senior Director will play a critical role in driving data-driven innovation and business growth, balancing the needs of both data engineering and innovation lab responsibilities to deliver value to the organization.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Break down silos to achieve the organization's vision of unlocking the full potential of analytics and AI;

  • Define, set, and implement plans for the overall strategic direction for analytics and AI data with focus on capital markets;

  • Plan and position Data teams for long-term success;

  • Identify and take action on opportunities to improve the organization;

  • Contribute to the overall strategic direction for Lumina, RBC’s analytics and AI data platform;

  • Communicate strategy and vision to executives and all levels of the organization;

  • Provide overall direction for the development of data applications;

  • Monitor market and technology trends that will impact the organization's Data strategy;

  • Be a visible leader internally and face of the Hub externally, building the Tech@RBC brand in market;

  • Lead a tech team aligned to their business, as well as support and lead other local leaders in hub;

  • Assist in setting strategic direction, and support execution of aligned initiatives in the Innovation Hub.

You're our ideal candidate if you have:

  • 12+ years’ relevant experience with a focus on a multi-stakeholder environment, large impact projects and multi-faceted teams and securing executive support/buy-in;

  • Practical experience leading multiple teams of engineers and working cross functionally with other areas of IT;

  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders, contractors, vendors and suppliers;

  • Thrive in high pressure, complex, multiple stakeholder environments;

  • Enthusiasm, passion and drive to investigate and understand trends and new technologies;

  • Strong communication and influencing skills;

  • Experience in capital markets IT (not required, but a plus).
